Computergestützter Mikromagnetismus ist eine Disziplin welche Magnetismus auf Mikrometerskalen unter Einbeziehung von klassischer Physik und Quantenmechanik beschreibt. Sie ging aus Anwendungen wie Festplatten und Design magnetischer Materialien hervor und ist heutzutage ein Antreiber für das Design von hoch-effektiven Magneten mit reduziertem Anteil an seltenen Erden für Grüne Energietechnologie wie elektrische/hybride Fahrzeuge und elektrische Wind- und Hydro-Stromerzeugung. Weitere Anwendungen betreffen Direktzugriffsspeicher, magnetische Sensoren und nanomagnetische Materialien und Apparate. Allerdings stoßen Computersimulationen für diese Anwendungen sehr schnell auf ihre Grenzen, da das Wechselspiel von Phänomenen auf relativ großen (klassischer Elektromagnetismus) und sehr kleinen (Quantenphysik) Längenskalen berücksichtigt werden muss, was die zur Verfügung stehenden Rechenressourcen leicht überschreiten lässt. Das Projekt Methoden reduzierter Ordnung für mikromagnetische Simulationen hat sich als Ziel gesetzt angewandte Physiker, Theoretiker und Ingenieure mit realisierbaren mathematischen Werkzeugen für deren Material- und Designsimulationen auszustatten. Die Zugänge hierfür konzentrieren sich auf die Reduzierung der Rechenkomplexität durch vereinfachte zugrundeliegende Modelle, wie beispielsweise Tensor-Produktansätze, welche die Dimensionalität reduzieren jedoch das Wesentliche erfassen. Ein Hauptziel ist die Entwicklung von Methoden für Computersimulationen welche die zeitliche Veränderung der magnetischen Zustände in Materialien in Größenordnungen von mehreren Mikrometern beschreiben, eine Aufgabe die mit üblichen Methoden heutzutage definitiv nicht zu bewerkstelligen ist. Das Projekt ist ein Beispiel für die Verbesserung einer Disziplin der rechnergestützten Wissenschaften mittels innovativen theoretischen Modellen und praktischen mathematischen Methoden und steht in direktem Zusammenhang mit brauchbaren Ingenieursanwendungen.
