Die Solar Orbiter Mission der Europäischen Weltraumbehörde ESA (Start: Februar 2020) wird bis zu einer Entfernung von 0.28 Astronomischen Einheiten an die Sonne fliegen, das heißt näher als der Planet Merkur. Solar Orbiter wird unser Verständnis der Heliosphäre revolutionieren eine riesige Plasmawolke, die von unserer Sonne erzeugt wird und in die unser ganzes Sonnensystem eingebettet ist. Die energiereichsten Ausbrüche der Sonne, Flares und koronale Massenauswürfe, sind die Ursache für starke Störungen des Weltraumwetters in Erdnähe. Aufgrund der zunehmenden Abhängigkeit von sensibler und weltraumgestützter Technik ist unsere moderne Gesellschaft auch zunehmend anfällig für Störungen des Weltraumwetters. Die zentrale wissenschaftliche Fragestellung der Solar Orbiter Mission ist es, zu verstehen, wie die Sonne unsere Heliosphäre erzeugt und moduliert. Solar Orbiter hat zehn wissenschaftliche Instrumente an Bord, für abbildende Beobachtungen sowie auch für in-situ Messungen, inklusive der ersten Nahaufnahmen der Sonne und ihrer Pole. Solar Orbiter wird unser Wissen über das Magnetfeld der Sonne, den Sonnenwind, das heliosphärische Magnetfeld, energetische Teilchen von der Sonne sowie Flares und koronale Massenauswürfe fundamental erweitern. Das STIX Instrument (Spectrometer Telescope for Imaging X- rays) an Bord von Solar Orbiter nimmt Spektren und Bilder der Sonne bei Röntgenwellenlängen auf. Beobachtungen der Sonne im Röntgenbereich ermöglichen eine Diagnostik der in Flares beschleunigten hochenergetischen Elektronen (mittels der nicht-thermischen Bremsstrahlung, die sie aussenden) sowie des heißesten Sonnenplasmas, das in Flares auf Temperaturen von 10-50 Millionen Grad aufgeheizt wird und thermische Bremsstrahlung im Röntgenbereich emittiert. Darüber hinaus ist STIX auch sensitiv für die Untersuchung der kleinsten solaren Flares, sogenannte Mikroflares. Die wissenschaftlichen Zielsetzungen des Projekts sind folgende: a) die Analyse von Mikroflares und ihre Relevanz für die Heizung der Millionen-Grad heißen äußersten Schicht der Sonnenatmosphäre, der Korona; b) kombinierte Messungen der Röntgenstrahlung der Flare-beschleunigten Elektronen auf der Sonne mittels STIX und der Elektronen, die von der Sonne entkommen und in-situ von Solar Orbiter Instrumenten sowie von NASAs Parker Solar Probe Mission (die bis zu 9 Sonnenradien an die Sonne heranfliegen wird) gemessen werden; c) stereoskopische Beobachtungen der Röntgenstrahlung von Flares, um die Richtungsabhängigkeit der Strahlung und der beschleunigten Elektronenverteilung zu studieren. Die Kombination von STIX mit anderen Instrumenten auf Solar Orbiter und den sonnennahen Messungen von NASAs Parker Solar Probe ermöglicht fundamental neue Zugänge und Einblicke in die Beschleunigung und den Transport von hochenergetischen Teilchen von der Sonne.
