We offer an FWF-funded PhD position (30 hours per week) in the field of artificial organs as part of a cooperation between the Center for Biomedical Research and Translational Surgery and the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna.

We are looking for an exceptionally talented and motivated PhD student with a degree in veterinary medicine to join our highly interdisciplinary research group consisting of veterinarians, engineers and medical doctors.

Durable left ventricular support with implantable blood pumps has become a standard therapy for patients with advanced heart failure as a bridge to transplantation. In this project, we are researching a strategy to restore cardiac function by optimizing the biomechanics of the heart with the implanted blood pump. To this end, we will develop a novel chronic large animal model and perform ex-vivo experiments with isolated large animal hearts.

Your tasks:

• Collaboration and independent conduct of animal experiments (focus on experimental surgery, anesthesia and intensive care medicine)

• Veterinary care and health monitoring of livestock in accordance with § 20 Para. 1 TVG

• Implementation and monitoring of the hygiene concept

• Collaboration on animal experiments including documentation

• Student support

You are/have:

• An exceptionally talented and motivated PhD candidate with a diploma degree in veterinary medicine

• Good knowledge of animal welfare legislation and international guidelines in the field of laboratory animal science

• Proof of knowledge of laboratory animal science (Felasa B, C), specialized knowledge in Surgery, anesthesia and intensive care medicine (especially large animals)

• A high degree of personal integrity

• Very good knowledge of German and English (oral and written)

• Very good ability to work in a team

• Keen interest in medicine, biology and biomedical engineering
