The research group of Ass.-Prof. J. Mateos at the Faculty of Chemistry is looking for applicants (m/f/d) for a doctoral position with research experience in organic and organometallic chemistry in the field of homogeneous catalysis and C–H activation.
Your personal sphere of influence:
We are pleased to offer a fully funded doctoral position in a newly established research group with a young and vibrant atmosphere. The position will focus on developing new research pathways in the field of homogeneous catalysis. In particular, you will potentially work on the development of novel catalysts for new transformations, as well as on the activation of inert chemicals. Become part of our vibrant team and unleash your creativity by exploring diverse activation mechanisms (i.e., thermal, photochemical, and electrochemical activations). Your research activities will include:
i) the design, synthesis, and purification of organic and organometallic catalysts;
ii) the application of the developed catalysts in homogeneous catalysis, and
iii) elucidating reaction mechanisms using various techniques (e.g., NMR, UV-Vis, CV, IR, etc.).
The aim is to expand the current knowledge of main-group catalyst activation and contribute to the development of more sustainable methods. We are looking for ambitious and creative individuals with a solid background in organic chemistry and synthesis. Interested candidates with a passion for innovative research and a strong interest in organic synthesis, catalysis, and physical organic chemistry are particularly encouraged to apply.
The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
Your future tasks:
The research group of Ass.- Prof. Mateos is located at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, University of Vienna. Our research interests span the multidisciplinary field of small-molecule activation. Our two main current focuses are repurposing commonly used chemicals and applying and expanding the existing knowledge of physical organic chemistry to design new catalysts. As a doctoral student in the Mateos Group, you will have the unique opportunity to work at the interface of organic synthesis, physical organic chemistry, and state-of-the-art applications. Furthermore, you will become part of an international team.
You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:
• You will be involved in research projects and scientific studies in the field of organic chemistry.
• We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
• You are working on your dissertation and its completion.
• You hold courses independently to the extent of the provisions of the collective agreement.
• You will take on adminstrative tasks in research and teaching.
This is part of your personality:
• You hold a master’s degree in chemistry or a related field.
• Experience with handling air-sensitive compounds (especially with the use of a glovebox) is highly relevant.
• Experience in organic synthesis or catalysis is advantageous.
• Strong skills in critically analyzing scientific publications.
• Excellent command of spoken and written English (IELTS score ≥ 6.5).
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills and a passion for research.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a research team.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
What we offer:
Work-life balance: Our employees enjoy flexible working hours and can partially work remotely.
Inspiring working atmosphere: You are a part of an international academic team in a healthy and fair working environment.
Good public transport connections: Your workplace is easily accessible by public transport.
Internal further training & Coaching: Opportunity to deepen your skills on an ongoing basis. There are over 600 courses to choose from – free of charge.
Fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 3578,80 (on a full-time basis) increases if we can credit professional experience.
Equal opportunities for all: We welcome every additional/new personality to the team!
