At the Center for Energy we are committed to creating cutting-edge solutions for tomorrow's transportation and energy challenges. Our key projects focus on the exciting world of future transportation systems, including e-mobility, energy consumption, and energy systems. We aim to understand and improve the impact of (e-)mobility on the energy system, helping to shape a sustainable future and contribute to the European Union’s climate goals.

Our Competence Unit "Sustainable Thermal Energy Systems", part of the Center for Energy specialises on Heat Pump Systems. These enable the use of waste heat by using small amounts of electricity and thus efficiently substitute the use of primary energy such as coal and gas, therefore, they are particularly relevant for the manufacturing industry. Throughout our research projects we work on various innovative concepts, and one of them are the Rotating Heat Pumps, that use only rotational energy for the compression of GWP-neutral noble gases.

Your tasks:

- Conduct a thorough literature research on the topic of heat transfer in rotating systems.

- Under the guidance of our team, you will identify and select the most appropriate heat transfer models for our application.

- You will perform numerical simulations (including Mesh generation) in Ansys (CFX or Fluent) based on existing models.

- You will study the impact of specific parameters on various useful influencing variables (for e.g., speed, channel shape, etc.)

- You will learn how to evaluate the results obtained and prepare them for use in scientific publications.

- You will broaden your knowledge in the field of heat pumps-

- Under the guidance of our team, you will enhance your skills in the field of numerical methods with the Navier Stokes Solver Suite ANSYS (CFX or FLUENT).

Your qualifications:

- Ongoing master’s studies in mechanical engineering, process engineering, energy engineering or technical physics

- Good knowledge of numerical methods, ideally in CFD

- Interest in the conception of scientific studies

- Enjoyment of application-oriented issues in industry (primarily the energy industry)

- High level of commitment and ability to work in a team.

- Good command of written and spoken English and German

Why you should join us:

- Be part of an inclusive, multidisciplinary team and learn how to conduct collaborative research: you will work with your AIT colleagues while being involved in our FFG research project CONAN.

- Benefit of mentorship and networking: you will be trained in scientific work & will have the opportunity to discuss experiences with our scientists as well as with our project partner ECOP, expanding also your professional network.

What to expect:

EUR 968 gross per month for 20 hours/week based on the collective agreement. There will be additional company benefits. You will be part of our international Young AIT network. As a research institution, we are familiar with the supervision and execution of master’s theses, and we are looking forward to supporting you accordingly.

TOMORROW TODAY - WITH YOU?

At AIT diversity and inclusion are of great importance. This is why we strive to inspire women to join our teams in the field of technology. We welcome applications from women, who will be given preference in case of equal qualifications after taking into account all relevant facts and circumstances of all applications.

Please submit your application documents including your CV, cover letter, relevant certificates (transcript of records) online: https://jobs.ait.ac.at/Job/237893
