The coaching workshops “Submitting FWF Proposals” give you not only helpful insights into the FWF's funding principles and decision-making procedure, but also advice and tips on how to submit an effective application. This particular event is aimed especially at researchers with the required qualifications who are planning to submit a proposal in the funding program Arts-Based Research in the near future.

As previously announced, the FWF will be switching the Elise Richter program (incl. Elise Richter PEEK) to PROFI funding mode starting October 1, 2023.

Austrian Science Fund (FWF) selects eight additional top researchers for the START Award

The FWF makes its funding decisions based on international peer reviews. Previously, two reviews per proposal were required up to a requested funding amount of €400,000. Due to inflation and the resulting higher costs, the FWF is increasing this amount to €450,000 as of July 1, 2023.

The FWF is gradually shifting the administration of all its funding programs to the new PROFI mode. Clinical Research is the next program to make the switch, starting in July.

The FWF invites tenders for a study to analyse the direct and indirect economic impact of research results that have emerged in whole or in part from FWF-funded projects over the past 10 to 20 years.

The FWF responds to inflation and increases funding for salaries in ongoing FWF projects for the year 2023. Researchers receive additional funding for personnel costs in both ad personam as well as PROFI funding mode. With this step, the FWF is helping to compensate for inflationary losses, especially for young researchers (two-thirds of all FWF-funded researchers are younger than 36 years old).

The FWF has been gradually converting the administration of its funding programs to the new PROFI mode since 2019. The goal is to make the funding process easier for researchers and their institutions, while still ensuring autonomy in the application process. As of May 31, 2023, the FWF’s international programs will now also be available in PROFI funding mode.

The updated Application Guidelines for Principal Investigator Projects (previously Stand-Alone Projects) reflecting the previously announced switch to PROFI funding mode, valid starting March 20, 2023, will be available online on Monday. The change affects only new submissions, applications already submitted and ongoing projects are not affected.

Since 2019, the FWF has been gradually switching the administration of its funding programs to the new PROFI mode. AI Mission Austria, a new funding initiative by aws, FFG, and FWF, is supporting the development of AI as a key technology, from research to implementation. Funding for the initiative has been provided by Fonds Zukunft Österreich, and the FWF has been allotted a funding volume of €1.9 million for AI Mission Austria projects. Applications can be submitted under several programmes starting 3 November 2022.

Funding work published on an open-access basis has been part of the FWF portfolio for many years. Researchers from all scientific disciplines can apply for funding for their book publications and digital publications. The FWF also supports the establishment and modernisation of academic journals with the aim of meeting the minimum open-access requirements of Plan S of the cOAlition S. October has brought some changes to the funding programme, which also result in a faster decision-making process.

More fundamental knowledge to create more efficient electronics, more stable quantum computers, or to better understand the molecular mechanisms of heredity—the FWF’s “Special Research Programmes” programme enables teams at different research institutes to work together to investigate a central research question. The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is providing a total of €15 million in funding to four new Special Research Programmes, involving numerous teams from Austria and Germany. The aim is to promote further collaboration and closer networks among leading researchers.

Research data management is an integral part of good research practice. For that reason, a data management plan (DMP) has been required for all FWF-funded projects since 2019. Starting in 2022, a new DMP template is available.
