Rudolf Carnap (1891-1970) is regarded as a classic of 20th century analytic philosophy and the philosophy of science. This is true for his work as a member of the Vienna circle (1926-1935) and for his time in the US (1936-1970). The aim of this project is to investigate continuities and breaks that characterize Carnaps time in the US. For this purpose, it combines historical and systematic research on Carnaps life and work as well as editorial work on Carnaps diaries and scientific correspondence. It is a follow-up project to the FWF research grant P31716 Carnap in Context II, which was mainly focused on Carnaps European years. The project is based on (A) a case study that investigates various practical aspects of Carnaps philosophy; these include (1) his non-cognitivism about moral and normative statements, (2) his theory of linguistic frameworks, (3) his political views, and (4) his approach to inductive logic and decision theory; and (B) two editorial tasks that prepare important source material for (A): (1) work on Carnaps scientific correspondence whose main objective is an online facsimile edition of the entire relevant material on valep.vc.univie.ac.at; (2) the development of a critical edition of Carnaps late diaries (1936-1970). On the editorial side, this project is part of the long-term editorial initiative Sources from the Nachlass of Rudolf Carnap (Meiner Verlag Hamburg), which, in turn, functions as a Parallelaktion to the ongoing edition Collected Works of Rudolf Carnap. The project will be realized by the following researchers: Dr. PD Christian Damböck (University of Vienna) (PI) MA Brigitta Arden (Freiburg) Dr. Brigitte Parakenings (Koblenz) Mag. Lois M. Rendl (University of Vienna)
