In the year 2012, the Literary Archives of the Austrian National Library acquired the rights to the literary estate of the Austrian poet Andreas Okopenko (19302010), winner, among others, of the Grand Austrian State Prize for Literature (1998) and the Georg Trakl Prize (2002). Livelong thor- oughly kept and available in a well-sorted shape, the diaries are the core of the 28 boxes of the com- prehensive estate. The project, a close collaboration between the Literary Archives and the Depart- ment for German Studies of the University of Austria, puts its focus on an annotated digital edition of all diary notions and on a printed edition of the most significant parts (hybrid edition). The digital edition will be realized according to the standards of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and connected to the website of the Austrian National Library in a sustainable manner and with un- limited access. Without editorial influences, the transcribed and encoded documents will be presented in different view options (facsimiles, diplomatic transcriptions, source code) and supplemented in a current process. Furthermore, annotations and a critical apparatus will be set up and integrated direct- ly into the XML-code. While the physical condition of the documents will be described in the summa- rising annotations, the biographical, literary historical and text-genetical relations are presented in a detail commentary, combined with different contemporary photographs, newspaper-articles and audio and video sources. The project will focus on the edition of Okopenkos diaries in the area of Digital Humanities regard- ing the authors poetological pioneer work in hypertext-poetry (esp. Lexikon-Roman, 1970). Throughout his life, Okopenko kept a position outside of all existing literary trends and turned out to be a reserved but rigorous observer of the literary scene in Austrias Second Republic. So Okopenkos highly personal perceptions and awareness of his own historical context make him a distinguished archaeologist, archivist and chronicler of his time.
The FWF-project Andreas Okopenko: Diaries of the Poets Estate (Hybridedition) was realised between 2015 and 2018 in close collaboration between the Department of German Studies at the University of Vienna and the Literary Archives of the Austrian National Library. It focused on the literary estate of the Austrian poet Andreas Okopenko (19302010), winner of the Grand Austrian State Prize for Literature (1998) and the Georg Trakl Prize (2002). His estate is a comprehensive collection of diary notations, typescripts, notes, correspondence and other material, which was archived and partly arranged by the poet himself, and which offers valuable insights regarding literary historical, poetological and text-genetical aspects. The diaries that were written between 1949 and 1954, about more than 3000 pages, were chosen for publication. The FWF-project established an annotated digital edition (following the TEI guidelines) hosted by the Austrian National Librarys website in a sustainable manner and with unlimited access. The main goal was to provide an optimal valorisation of the estates core documents and to represent the authors significance for Austrian avant-garde literature, especially at its beginning in the 1950ies, in a contemporary light. According to the concept of hybrid editing, in addition to the digital edition the most significant parts of the diaries will be printed. Thus, the project demonstrates the advantages of both ways of editing: while on the one hand the analogue edition gears towards a classical reading audience, the digital edition, on the other hand, uses technology at the state of the Digital Humanities to attract the attention of academics (including computer scientists) as well as an interested audience. The digital edition of Okopenkos diaries represents a pilot project of Sustainable infrastructure for digital editions at the Austrian National Library. Being processed at its Department of Research and Development in the scope of the national Competency Network Digital Scholarly Edition (Kompetenznetzwerk Digitale Editionen, KONDE), the project uses the GAMS system developed at the Centre of Information Modelling Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities. Technically the project was implemented by Christiane Fritze and Christoph Steindl. A version 1.0 of the digital edition was published on December 12th 2018 for midyear 2019, a version 2.0 with new, additional functions is scheduled.
