Abstract
Musicologica Austriaca Journal for Austrian Music Studies (MusAu) is the official peerreviewed journal of the
Austrian Musicological Society (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Musikwissenschaft, ÖGMW), the largest
association of music scholars and respective institutions in Austria.
MusAu has been published on an annual basis since 1977 and is one of the leading Austrian musicological
journals. It covered all fields of musical scholarship and, unlike any other existing journal, represented
musicological research on and from Austria as a whole. Each issue contained 8-16 articles (thematically linked as
well as various papers) and several extensive book reviews. Today MusAu can be found in many significant
libraries throughout the world (USA: 37 libraries, United Kingdom: 5, Germany: 39, Switzerland: 5).
In the course of the journal`s growing internationalization within the last 15 years, English has increasingly become
a second publication language (2007-2011: 34% of all papers were on average published in English.
Furthermore, all abstracts were available in English.). Starting as an open access journal in 2014, MusAu will
provide all its contents in English. It has an international editorial board that consists of first-class scholars from
around the world. MusAu will publish 12-18 papers per annum and will also continue providing detailed book
reviews.
Recognizing Austria`s significant role in the history of Western music, the online journal MusAu will focus on
Austrian music studies and on research related to this cultural region. An emphasis is put on a methodological
cooperation of all musicological sub-disciplines as well as on the integration of related fields.
