Biodiversa+ – the European Biodiversity Partnership – is pleased to announce that its 2023-2024 joint Call for Transnational Research Proposals on “Nature-based solutions for biodiversity, human well-being and transformative change – BiodivNBS” is now open.

This call aims to support transnational research projects (three years in duration) addressing one or more of the three (non-exclusive) themes below: 

  • Synergies and trade-offs of nature-based solutions in the context of human well-being
  • Nature-based solutions mitigating anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity loss
  • The contribution of nature-based solutions for just transformative change

Research focusing on all environments (i.e. terrestrial, inland freshwater including wetlands, and marine) will be eligible for funding. 

Research teams will be invited to form transnational research consortia with eligible partners from a minimum of three countries participating in the call (including at least two from EU Member States or EU Associated Countries).

Funding organisations from 34 countries are planning to join this call and have reserved – together with the European Commission – a total amount of over €40 million: 

Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada (Québec), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Georgia, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Morocco, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Tunisia, and Türkiye.

A two-step process will apply, with a mandatory pre-registration of projects in the first step and submission of full proposals in the second step. Pre-registrations and full proposals (to be written in English) must be submitted electronically using the Electronic Proposal Submission System (EPSS). The link to the EPSS will be available on the Biodiversa+ website. 

Deadline for pre-proposal submission (mandatory): November 10, 2023, 3:00 pm
Deadline for full-proposal submission: April 9, 2024, 3:00 pm
Funding decision: estimated December 2024

In addition to the application submitted to the Call Secretariat, administrative and financial data as well as project abstracts (in accordance with the FWF guidelines for Principal Investigator Projects) must also be submitted online to the FWF at https://elane.fwf.ac.at/

This is already required in the pre-registration stage, under the program category “PIK – International Programs – pre-proposal,” deadline November 10, 2023, 3:00 pm. For the full proposal stage, applicants must choose the program category “PIN – International Programs” (Deadline April 9, 2024, 3:00 pm). Both steps are mandatory.

ATTENTION:

  • The maximum amount that can be requested for Austrian project partners is €300,000. 
  • The application procedure has been changed from ad personam funding to institutional funding (PROFI). Please note that in PROFI mode, the application must be approved for submission by the research institution. For this purpose the research institution must be registered on the FWF’s research institution portal.
