Bioinformatics in Cardiology

Medical University of Vienna

Master Thesis – 3 Positions at the Medical University of Vienna, Department of Cardiology

Topics: Cardiac molecular biology – Bioinformatics

• Cardio protective mechanisms in different animal models

• Development of cardiac hypertrophy

• Comparison of cardiac fibrosis in different disease entities

Working group description - research interest:

Our research focus is cardiac regenerative medicine and basic research. We investigate molecular mechanisms of myocardial diseases (Myocardial infarction, Cardiac Hypertrophy, Cardioprotection, Cardiac regeneration) in the translational porcine animal model in vivo and in vitro. The methods that we use in the laboratory include cell culture models, real time PCR and gene expression analysis (mRNA, miRNA, non-coding RNAs, circular RNAs), imaging with fluorescence microscope, live cell imaging, biomarker research (ELISA), histology (paraffin and plastic embedding), western blot, production and investigation cell-based and cell free (secretome) products for cardiac regeneration and more. Furthermore we also have great interest in processing next generation sequencing data with bioinformatics.

Therefore we are looking for motivated master students, working in the field of bioinformatics, to support our team to investigate one of our bioinformatics related topics.

Your responsibilities:

• Implementation of research data processing and analysis

• Participation in research projects

• Participation in writing research articles

Your Profile:

• Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics or related discipline

• Currently studying or starting to attend a Master program for Bioinformatics

• Great interest in molecular biology and special interest in Bioinformatics

• Excellent English skills (written and oral communication)

• Highly motivated and self-driven working morale

Your perspective:

• Flexible working hours, weekly lab meeting attendance mandatory

• First authorship publication possible if the appropriate requirements are fulfilled

• Upon mutual agreement and satisfaction, a minor employment is possible
